Bactrian Camel

Camelus bactrianus

Why the bactrian camel?

A large, even-toed ungulate instantly recognisable by the two prominent humps on its back, which store fat rather than water. It reaches up to 2.3 m at the shoulder and weighs 450-650 kg, and its thick woolly coat protects it from both bitter cold and searing heat before being shed in ragged clumps each summer. Long legs and broad, cushioned pads let it walk easily across sand and snow alike.

Did you know?

A Bactrian camel can lose 25-30% of its body water without coming to harm, then rehydrate rapidly by drinking a huge amount at once - an adaptation that lets it survive in arid deserts.

How adoption works

  1. 1Choose a tier and pay online by card.
  2. 2You'll receive a confirmation by e-mail and the adoption certificate within 14 days.
  3. 3We'll keep sending you updates and photos of your animal.
  4. 4For the Patron and Benefactor tiers we'll arrange a visit and experiences with you.

The adoption is symbolic — the animal stays in the care of the zoo. It also makes a great gift: in the note at checkout, tell us who the certificate should be made out to. More information at info@zoosedlec.cz.
